NHL Playoff Race Red Wings Bruins miss big opportunities

The Eastern Conference playoff race is down to three teams ( , , ) fighting for two playoff spots: the second wild card spot (where all three teams have a shot), and the third spot in the Atlantic Division (Boston and Detroit). The only team out of that group that ended up having a positive night on Tuesday was the Flyers, simply because they did not play.Entering play on Tuesday the Bruins occupied the third spot in the Atlantic with 88 points, while the Flyers and Red Wings were tied for the second wild card spot with 87 points.Because the Flyers have played in fewer games at this point, they own the tiebreaker for now on the Red Wings. But depending on what happened on Tuesday, the Red Wings had a chance to jump over both of them and go from being completely out of the playoffs, to holding the third spot in the Atlantic. That would have then dropped Boston into the second wild card spot and push Philadelphia back out. And even though that very nearly happened, the standings ended up remaining the same after everything was completed. Here's why...The Bruins could not beat Keith KincaidFirst you had the Paul Watson Jersey Bruins continuing their late season slide and losing for the sixth time in their past seven games by dropping a 2-1 decision in New Jersey. It's not that it was a bad performance by the Bruins by any means (it really wasn't). They ended up outshooting the by a 40-15 margin and completely controlled the game for most of the night. That type of effort be good enough to get a win, and it almost always is. Since 1987 only 27 teams have managed 40 shots and allowed 15 or le s and not actually won the game. This was the case of a goalie simply stealing a game.It just came at a really bad time for the Bruins. That lo s by the Bruins created a huge opportunity for the Red Wings to not only jump ahead of the Flyers for the second wild card spot, but also move ahead of the Bruins for the third spot in the Atlantic Division. So what did the Red Wings do with that opportunity? The Red Wings could not hold a third period leadInstead of moving ahead of two teams in one night, the Red Wings ended up bailing the Bruins out because they could not beat a Montreal team that had nothing to play for, had won just four of its previous 14 games, and is still pretty banged up continuing to play without P.K. Subban, Brendan Gallagher and Carey Price.Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity that was placed in front of them with the Bruins' lo s to the Devils, they lost in regulation, 4-3, after giving up two third period goals (and another that was called back on a somewhat controversial review for goalie interference). The Red Wings battle back from an early 2-0 deficit (which resulted in Jalen Harris Jersey starting goalie getting benched for ) to take a 3-2 lead into the third period, but they were not able to hold on. The problem the Red Wings are going to have is that they are quickly running out of time to make a move. They only have five games remaining in the regular season, while the Flyers still have games left when it comes to the Wild Card race.Because of that the Bruins might actually be the more realistic target for them at the moment. Even if Philadelphia only wins four of its remaining seven games, the Red Wings would need to go 4-1 in their remaining five just to them. If Philadelphia only wins three of those games Detroit would still need seven out of 10 points (3-1-1) to finish ahead of them. The only thing that seems to be working against the Flyers at this point is that six of their remaining seven games are part of back-to-back situations, and at the moment . The biggest thing the Red Wings have going for them at the moment (other than Philadelphia's schedule) is two of those five remaining games are against the teams they are chasing (Philadelphia on April 6; Boston on April 7). Those two games could end up deciding whether or not the Red Wings run their postseason streak to 25 years.
